Philippe Starck
Originally a nightclub designer in the 1970s, Philippe Starck became widely known in the 1980s for projects ranging from President Mitterand’s private headquarters to the Café Costes in Paris. Starck's work does not concentrate on the creation of provocative and expensive single pieces. Instead, his product designs are of usable household items which Starck himself helps to market for mass production. His products and furnishings are often stylized, streamlined and organic in their look and are also constructed using unusual combinations of materials.
He is also known for interiors, such as the Royalton and Paramount hotels in New York and for product designs including furniture for Kartell, Driade, and his lighting for Flos and domestic wares for Alessi.
